Probably the only thing harder for an author to find a publishing deal is for a screenwriter to get the elusive deal for their screenplay. The courage required to take a chance on the unknown and untested rather than rely on the safety of the formulaic and commercial is prevalent and, from a business point of view, also understandable. Making a film is a risk. It’s a risk creatively, financially and can be a risk to careers and bankability for those involved.
And yet some of the most daring, memorable, and brilliant films have come from original screenplays. Without them we could have no films from the Coen Brothers, Woody Allen, Ingmar Bergman and, apart from Jackie Brown, Quentin Tarantino. We would be missing such films as ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘Shaun of the Dead’, ’12 Years a Slave’, ‘Whiplash’, ‘In Bruges’, ‘Lady Bird’, ‘Ex Machina’, ‘Parasite’ not to mention the film famous for having the most expensive screenplay ever sold at that time, ‘Basic Instinct’ which made waves for earning Joe Eszterhas a cool £2.3 million in 1992 and set a precedent for the value of original work.
